Job Description

Shriners Children's is actively seeking a full-time Pediatric Intensivist to join our growing team at Shriners Children's Ohio in Dayton. The Pediatric Intensivist will be responsible for the medical management of all patients on the unit, in close collaboration with the attending Burn and Plastic surgeons. A major focus for the candidate will be on the daily management of acutely burned patient as well as the post-operative management of surgical patients undergoing burn reconstructions as well post-surgical management of craniofacialpatients. The intensivist will serve a 7 bed (expanding) unit with a mix of both critical and non-critical patients. The unit is staffed with burn/critical care surgeons and plastic/reconstructive surgeons in collaboration with 2 pediatric intensivists. 5 APPs and moonlighting residents also serve the unit. The unit also has an active sedation service, which is incorporated into the provider's service week. This position entails a 1.0 FTE commitment, structured as 7 consecutive days on service, followed by 7 to 10 days of back-up home call coverage in which in-house nights are incorporated into when patient condition requires this.

Compensation is determined based on years of post-fellowship experience and departmental equity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic critical illnesses in pediatric patients.
  • Provide advanced life support, including mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and vasoactive medications.
  • Perform critical procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial catheterization, and lumbar punctures.
  • Coordinate with pediatric subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Work closely with surgical teams to stabilize critically ill patients.
  • Discuss diagnosis, treatment plans, and prognosis with patients' families in a compassionate and clear manner.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance for families dealing with critical illness.
  • Educate and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in pediatric critical care medicine.
  • Participate in clinical research, quality improvement projects, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, patient safety protocols, and ethical standards of care.
  • Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
  • Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
  • Successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Pediatrics
  • Successful completion of a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
  • Minimum 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in pediatric critical care medicine preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure
  • Board certification or eligibility in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
  • Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
  • Extensive knowledge of pediatric pathophysiology, pharmacology, and intensive care procedures
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with medical teams and families
